Makale Özeti: FREUD VERSUS ADLER

This article is about an interpretation of a dream by two different perspectives which are Freud’s perspective and Adlerian perspective.
Marry Field is 20 years old. She is an only child of her family. Mary and her family are protestant. She didn’t finish her studying because she had conflict with her family about choice of a collage. She likes a man who is catholic and Italian too much, and her parents didn’t agree with this because some ethnic and religious problems which threats him as someone who is inferior to them, but she doesn’t want to give up on him. So Marry has a conflict with her family about the man she likes.
The Dream
Marry was sitting in a comfortable and unfamiliar place. The place was different than her home. Her home was furnished is better than that place. Her uncle and her father were there, and they were sitting on the front porch and they were talking. She was inside the room and because of the weather was so hot, the window was open. Her Italian friend's brother who was very peculiarly dressed, wearing modern American clothes but with a large, gaudy-colored Mexican sombrero on his head came to front of the door. He gave a letter to her from his brother. That Italian man said her in his letter that he had been married to a Miss Mildread Dowl. She was scared by this news and couldn’t account for the woman’s name. She felt like she had been stabbed in the heart. She had strong feeling of this pain and fell to the floor. Then she woke up with tears rolling down her face. Following days, she felt extremely sad and joyless. She wrote this dream to Freud to get help.

Freud Perspective
Freud believed that this dream is showing her unconscious and repressed feelings. Freud said that because of she has conflict between her feeling about him and her parent`s thoughts about him, she had grief when she read he had been married. Because of she is felling that antagonism, she reacted that emotionally which was excessive grief. So that Freud made her understand that she has an ambivalent feeling toward that man. And he said that he cannot interpret the dream by just this dream without knowing enough information about her past.
An Adlerian Perspective
In Adlerian psychology, there is a unity of psychology and individual coherence. People have a life style based on this coherence. There is nothing about unconscious and conscious to affect differently our lives. According to Adler, dreams are productions of our lifestyle and present problems that we have. The feelings that we are feeling when we are dreaming are same with the feelings when we are awake. So for Marry’s dream, Adler’s interpretation is this; that Italian and catholic man was substituted with a different and poorly furniture home, because as her parents say he is not equal for them and he is different from them as a religion and ethnic. But still she was feeling herself relax in her dream, because in her real life she wants to be with him. She was deeply brokenhearted when she heard he got married, because this is exactly how it would happen in the real life. This dream is showing her that how much she likes him and wants to be with him, and in the same time, there can be negative outcomes if she opposes and resist to her parents. If she wanted help from an Adlerian therapist; therapist would work on courage, individual develop awareness, common sense, self-confidence, and autonomy.
