Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy provides the best and most detailed method for
translating humanist concepts into humanist behavior. REBT uses Socratic dialogue to help individuals examine old beliefs and manipulate them for more realistic life. Its fundamental tenets are applicable to all aspects of human experience. REBT focus on how individual enhance his or her ability to secure maximum quality in living and works people to avoid from self-defeating emotions and behaviors also motivate them to life-enhancing emotions and behaviors.
“What’s so” (what seems to be so) is important to identify “what works”. If we are not clear about what is so, it is difficult to determine what works. For example if your husband is a drunk, don’t expect him as a sober because that is just not what’s so. What works develop plans based on the knowledge that it’s awful to have a drunk around but you should not think that such a terrible person and you must not frustrate to develop plans. What does work is to accept the misfortunes that occur in our lives which are mostly out of our control while focusing on what is virtually always within our control: The way we choose to think about those negative things.
Personal power left the person when he or she use a way of thinking method which is include “should,” “must,” “can’t stand,” “need,” “awful,” and etc. These kind of concepts cause power to remove from the person and hand over to concepts. Likewise, “can’t stand” and “should” transfer power outside the person. Personal power is kept when one’s thinking involves such as “better if,” “don’t like,” “prefer,” “misfortune,” and etc. In such thinking, the person has choice and is not dominated by absolute concepts. Absolute ideas own us and rob us of our humanity so by using them we sign over a deed to our own being.
