Makale Özeti: RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY: A NON-A.A. OPTION

Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy was founded by Albert Ellis in 1955 and
provides people that work on their emotional and behavioral problems by focusing on the
situations in their lives. REBT includes variety of cognitive, emotive and behavioral
techniques in 12-steps programs to help the clients examine their beliefs and to learn how to
better control their thinking, emotions, and behaviors.
Ellis has written that REBT can be used very effectively with people that spirituality is
a central aspect of their life. Majority of clients who use REBT are religious and state that
REBT very helpful to achieve our goals by living with our values which are including ethical,
spiritual, and religious values.
A new organization that Rational Recovery Self-Help Network (RRSN or RR) which
is based on REBT was founded by Jack Trimpey in 1985. In this organization, each group
meets once or twice a week for about 90 minutes and led by a coordinator for professional
advices. Like REBT, it motivates people to help themselves without relying on a higher
power although most of the people in this group are religious. Meetings focuses on helping
people learn to use REBT to control their thinking, emotions and behaviors. Meetings
sometimes resemble group therapy by crosstalk. Participants focus on recent events and deal
with psychological problems, such as sexual abuse, in professional setting. They tell their
successess and failures and discuss how to overcome unfortunate situations. Many people need only a year for attending to group because after that they attempt to recover their life by self without any interference but Trimpey argued that these meetings can develop dependency for some participants and they attend more than a year.
Research suggest that more people get better when options are available to them and
Rational Recovery interested in providing an option to people who are loking for help to
overcome their problems and recent research suggest that RR is providing that help.
