Makale Özeti: The Relationship between Fatigue and Personality in a student population

In this study, the relationship between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)-like or fatigue symptoms and basic dimensions of personality are investigated.
CFS has complex symptoms which are associated with physiological, psychological, pathological process. It is comorbid with psychiatric disorder especially anxiety and depression.
Center for Disease Control and Prevention research results identified criteria of CFS which are; abnormal fatigue more than six months, numerous somatic complaints, neuropsychological disorders, and a reduction work, social and personal activity. CFS has multi-factorial dimension which are physical, physiological, psychological, and social factors.
Hughey’s phenomenological-psychological study of CFS
Before CFS: Individual was intellectual, energetic, driven, super-responsible, perfectionist, controlling, and related to quick cognition.
After CFS: Individual is limited energy, a loss of ability to engage in meaningful activities, diminished cognitive abilities, weakness, sluggishness, feelings of exhaustion, physical and emotional tiredness, and difficulty performing everyday task.
CFS is not explained medically. For this reason, many researchers have started to explain by using personality dimension. Numerous studies indicate that personality risk factors for CFS.
Personality dimension of neuroticism (N) is an important factor for personality theory and psychopathology. Low E and high N may trigger to be a social phobic, agoraphobic. N is also risk factor for eating disorder, major depression, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, bulimia nervosa.
Participants in this study;
235 of them were female and 231of them were male (total: 466). Age range differs from 18 to 43 year-old. None of them suffer from CFS; some of them had some CFS-like symptoms.
Arabic Scale of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ASCFS) and The Eysenk Personality Questionnaire (EPQ) were administrated to participants.
Results of this study demonstrate that female have higher score on ASCFS and N scale and lower mean score on E scale; males have opposite of this score. Result may be affected Arabic culture because of the fact that men have more authority and freedom than women in Arabic countries.
Finally ASCFS was found positively and significantly correlated with neuroticism and negatively correlated with extraversion.
