Makale Özeti:USING RATIONAL EMOTIVE BEHAVIOR THERAPY TECHNIQUES TO COPE WITH DISABILITY

Albert Ellis had multiple disabilities for a long times and years but he always used Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) to help himself to cope with these disabilities. He states that if you accept with these disabilities and stop whining about it, you can turn of its lemons into tasty lemonade.
Ellis’s first disability started with tired eyes and continued with hearing problem. He sometimes closed his eyes for resting them for a while even in the session of his clients. He also started to use hearing apparatus to hear the questions of his clients. At the age of 40, he was diagnosed as having diabetes and putting on insulin twice a day and serious diet program were added his disabilities list. Because of these disabilities, he must regularly see the several physicians as diabetologists, urologists, orthopedists and dermatologists. Urination problem which is result of diabetus was wasting the time for him and he worked out that problem. He did some interesting readings several minutes during urination and he thought that he could do other kinds of things as well to use this time. Using his REBT training, he worked on his low frustration tolerance and accepted what he cannot change. He learned to live with disabilities. REBT posits that there are two main instigators of human neurosis: First, low frustration tolerance (e.g., I absolutely must have what I want when I want it and must never, never be deprived of anything that I really, really desire). Second, self-denigration (e.g., when I do not perform well and win others’ approval, as at all times I should, ought, and must, I am an inadequate person).
Albert Ellis used REBT-oriented high frustration tolerance to stop himself from whining about disabilities. For REBT one of the most important things he does is to teach most of his clients to evaluate only their thoughts, feelings and actions and not evaluate their self, sense, or being. He followed this principle for many years and acknowledged that many of his behaviors are unfortunate, bad, and inadequate because they don’t fulfill his goals and desires. He thought that he is not a bad or inadequate person for having these failings. He glad to be alive and active although he is 82 years old.
He often used himself as a model and showed them as accepting himself with these physical problems and giving himself unconditional self acceptance (USA). He also showed them to have high frustration tolerance (HFT). Teaching clients to have unconditional self-acceptance is that acknowledging that their deficiencies are unfortunate, bad but that they are never, except by their own self-sabotaging definition, shameful or contemptible. He showed the clients that they never have to agree with this kind of bigotry and can actively fight against it in their own lives. People with physical disabilities are more frustrated than without such disabilities. Helping by HFT, Albert used himself as a model that showed how, at his older age and with his greater disabilities, he had little choice but to give up his former indulgences or die. So rather than die, he gave up putting four spoons of sugar and half cream in his coffee.
Cognitive, emotive, and behavioral therapy techniques are useful for people who have disabilities. REBT theorizes, human thinking, feeling and acting interact with each other and helpful to people with disability-related problems as multi-model therapy. It’s a form of psychotherapy and self-therapy designed for people who suffer from uncommon adversities. They learned to manage to make themselves feel the healthy negative emotions of sorrow, frustration while refusing to create unhealthy emotions of panic, depression and personal worthlessness.
